David Lakhdhir Publishes Article on Implications of the EU’s Due Diligence Directive for U.S. Companies in Business Law Today

July 15, 2024

Corporate partner David Lakhdhir wrote an article for the American Bar Association’s Business Law Today on the European Union’s recently-published Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and how it will significantly impact large companies operating in the EU, including nearly all large U.S. multinational enterprises. In the article, “The EU Due Diligence Directive: Implications for U.S. Companies,” published on July 15, David provides an in-depth overview of the directive, which converts previously non-binding UN and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development guidelines into legally enforceable obligations, covering areas such as workers' rights, climate change, environmental protection and human rights. Key compliance challenges for corporations include ensuring fair wages globally, protecting workers' rights in countries with differing laws, and balancing business operations with stringent environmental standards.

David notes that U.S. companies will want to assess the potential impact of the directive on their global operations, closely follow further developments as the CSDDD is transposed into national laws and prepare to become compliant before these new requirements start to become effective in 2027.
