Description of Program and Relief
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Food Benefits
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps) help people buy the food they need. In light of COVID-19, Governor Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Human Services have announced that SNAP benefits will be expanded. The expansion includes increasing monthly benefit amounts, expanding SNAP access, and expediting process and flexibility. Additionally, SNAP certificates that were set to expire in March, April, and May have been extended six months to September, October, and November.
The Illinois Department of Human Services will be also be providing a supplemental emergency SNAP allotment for April and May 2020. The supplemental emergency SNAP allotment is available to SNAP households that are receiving less than the maximum monthly SNAP allotment for their household size. April emergency allotments will be made available to active SNAP households on or before April 20, 2020.
As of June 2, 2020, 1.8 million SNAP recipients will be able to buy food online from participating grocery retailers. Access will be provided automatically to all existing Link card holders.
