The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Department hosted a webinar, “Microintervention Strategies: How to Practice Inclusion in Everyday Interactions,” facilitated by Dr. Derald Sue, professor of psychology and education in the Department of Counseling and Clinical Psychology at Teachers College and the School of Social Work at Columbia University. Dr. Sue has been identified as “the most influential multicultural scholar in the United States,” according to a national Fordham University study of multicultural publications and scholars.
Dr. Sue discussed examples of various types of “microaggressions,” which he defines as brief and commonplace verbal, behavioral or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate negative slights to an individual or group because of their identity. He also provided strategies and tactics to prevent or interrupt them, and other ways to practice inclusion in our daily interactions.
