Description of Program and Relief

Unemployment Insurance Benefits

Vermont’s unemployment insurance benefits historically required that claimants are able and available to work and actively searching for work. In response to COVID-19, Vermont has waived all work search requirements and expanded the scope of individuals eligible for unemployment benefits to include the following, without regard to the able and available to work requirement:

Employees temporarily laid-off due to:

  • Your employer ceasing operations for a COVID-19 related reason.

  • An order issued by the Governor or President.

  • Employees’ own COVID-19 related isolation/quarantine.

  • Employees who left employment due to:

  • Being sick or isolated as the result of COVID-19.

  • An unreasonable risk of exposure at your place of employment.

  • Caring for a family member who is sick or isolated as the result of COVID-19.

  • Caring for a family member who had an unreasonable risk of exposure at their place of employment.

  • Need to care for a child who has had their school or childcare center closed.
