Description of Program and Relief

Temporary Suspension of Debt Collection for Debts Owed to the City of Chicago, Ticketing, & Towing

Description of Program and Relief

In response to COVID-19, the City of Chicago has temporarily suspended its debt collection practices for debts owed to the City of Chicago and non-safety related citations and impounds, as well as penalties for late payments. This relief includes a suspension of late fees and defaults for city tickets, utility bills, parking and red-light citations, and booting. Note that the temporary suspension of debt collection does not relieve anyone of the obligation to make payments on any of their outstanding debts to the City of Chicago.

As Chicago begins the process to gradually reopen, the Department of Finance (DOF) will send notices and educate residents about the upcoming dates when the city will resume full enforcement for certain violations that were temporarily suspended due to COVID-19. Beginning July 1, the City will also use a staggered approach to phase in the collection of business taxes that have been deferred, as well as resume regular ticketing and collections. The temporary suspension of booting will continue.
