Description of Program and Relief

Moratorium on Residential Evictions

In light of the spread of COVID-19, the Illinois Governor has ordered that (i) all state, county, and local law enforcement officers must cease enforcement of orders of eviction for residential premises and (ii) a person or entity may not commence a residential eviction action.

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions

Applies to residential evictions. A residential eviction action may not be commenced unless a tenant poses a direct threat to the health and safety of other tenants, an immediate and severe risk to property, or a violation of any applicable building code, health ordinance, or similar regulation. Note that this order does not relieve anyone of the obligation to make their rent or mortgage payments, or comply with any other tenancy or mortgage obligation.
