COVID-19 Relief Package – Temporary Suspension of Utility Cut-Offs, Distribution of Sanitation Resources, Small Business Loans, and Homelessness Assistance

The Sacramento City Council has passed a COVID-19 relief package containing programs to assist individuals and small businesses with a variety of measures.

As part of that relief package, the City will temporarily suspend cutting off utility services to those who are unable to pay their monthly utility bills. Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) will not disconnect power due to non-payment through May 30, 2020. This applies to both residential and commercial customers. Customers will still owe SMUD payment for service during this time. PG&E will also similarly suspend service connections until further notice.

The City will also work with the Sacramento Central Labor Council to help people with the processes for unemployment, family leave, disability insurance, unemployment insurance, paid sick leave and workers’ compensation.

The City will also acquire and distribute emergency sanitation and cleaning supplies to businesses impacted by COVID-19.

The City has further approved up to $250,000 to purchase and distribute emergency sanitation and cleaning supplies for the homeless. Additional information regarding the above relief measures is forthcoming. The City has also established the Small Business Economic Emergency Relief Loan Program as part of a $1 million economic relief package for small local businesses impacted by COVID-19. The program is providing zero-percent interest loans of up to $25,000 per qualifying business. The City of Sacramento selected 101 local businesses to receive the zero-interest loans. Due to the overwhelming response, applications are currently closed until further notice. If additional funding becomes available, the application process will reopen.
