Description of Program and Relief
Child and Adult Care Food Program
California’s Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a state and federally-funded program that predates COVID-19, and can be used by eligible participants at this time.
The CACFP child care component gives financial aid to licensed child care centers and day care homes, with the objective of improving the diets of children under 13 years of age by providing nutritious, well-balanced meals. Public and private nonprofit institutions, as well as certain private for-profit institutions, that provide nonresidential day care and meet the eligibility requirements can receive aid.
The adult day care component is available to public or private nonprofit organizations, or certain for-profit organizations, that provide nonresidential day care services to functionally impaired adults or adults who are 60 years of age or older. The program provides centers with funding for a quality nutrition program, funding up to two meals and one snack, or two snacks and one meal, for each eligible participant, each day.
In response to COVID-19, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved a request from California to allow meal service during school closures. CACFP grantees should contact their specific CACFP agencies to determine whether their grants can support the ongoing availability of meals and snacks.
