Jake Adlerstein Discusses Record-High Bankruptcy Filings by PE-Backed Companies With S&P Global
January 9, 2025
Restructuring partner Jacob Adlerstein spoke with S&P Global about the surge in bankruptcy filings by U.S. companies backed by private equity and venture capital, representing the highest annual total on record. In “PE-backed company bankruptcies in US reach record high in 2024,” published on January 9, Jake notes that issues that drove restructuring activity after the pandemic continued to fuel the acceleration of bankruptcy filings last year, including issues related to consumer spending. “While interest rates started to get cut in the second half of the year, you certainly have a higher interest rate environment through 2024 than we experienced previously,” he says. “That had a meaningful impact on certain companies.”
Jake says he expects bankruptcy filings to decline in 2025. “You'll see a lot more out-of-court restructuring transactions and liability management transactions, which is a trend we saw in 2024 as well,” he notes.
