It’s Time to Show the Horror of Mass Shootings, Secretary Johnson Argues in Op-Ed in The Washington Post
June 1, 2022
Litigation partner Jeh Johnson published an op-ed in The Washington Post, "It’s time to show the real horror of mass shootings. In pictures." In the piece published on June 1, Jeh argues that, after the mass murder of children in Uvalde, Tex., Americans need to see images showing the graphic aftermath of mass shootings to catalyze decisive action to stem gun violence. "We need an Emmett Till moment," Jeh writes.
Jeh notes that the civil rights movement was in some sense sparked by outrage prompted by the gruesome image of the body of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old Black youth who was abducted, tortured and shot in the head by two white men, who were later acquitted by an all-white Mississippi jury.
"Certain images do more than speak a thousand words. Some actually reveal to us what no words can adequately convey. Images have the capacity to shock the conscience into action, galvanize a population, and alter the course of history," Jeh writes. "The public and the politicians who purport to represent them lack a vivid understanding of the price being paid."
