Pro Bono Client Obtains Favorable Settlement of Claims Against Landlord

Paul, Weiss successfully reached a $15,000 settlement resolving a pro bono client’s claims against her landlord for harassment, violations of Real Property Law Section 230, breach of contract and retaliatory eviction. Our client is a tenant organizer for Make the Road New York, the state’s largest progressive grassroots immigrant-led organization, and a tenant of the Park Hill Section 8 housing complex on Staten Island. She asserted her claims after Park Hill management repeatedly retaliated against her because of her tenant organizing efforts in conjunction with Make the Road at Park Hill. Among other things, Park Hill attempted to disrupt our client’s organizing activities by infiltrating tenant meetings, tearing down “Know Your Rights” flyers, demanding that tenants not allow organizers into their apartments to conduct inspections, and more. When these measures failed, Park Hill also filed two unsuccessful eviction proceedings against our client, and later filed an unlawful SLAPP suit against her, Make the Road and another Make the Road tenant organizer.
The Paul, Weiss team included pro bono attorney Jeremy Benjamin, litigation associates Makiko Hiromi, Eric Abrams and Amy Bowles. Litigation partner Gregory Laufer supervised the matter.
