Pro Bono Client Obtains Favorable Resolution of Race and Religious Discrimination Claim in NYC Commission on Human Rights Proceeding

Paul, Weiss obtained a favorable resolution of a discrimination claim litigated on behalf of our pro bono client before the Law Enforcement Bureau of the New York City Commission on Human Rights (NYCCHR). A Conciliation Agreement with NYCCHR settled our client’s claims against a Staten Island-based real estate broker who refused to lease commercial space to our client on the basis of his Middle Eastern descent and Muslim faith. Our client had sought to rent commercial space in order to open a math tutoring business, but when he responded to the broker’s advertisement, the broker replied with a racist phrase.
As part of the agreement, our client will receive a $15,000 settlement payment from the broker, and the broker must attend an anti-discrimination training and perform 50 hours of community service with a mosque or Islamic charitable organization.
The team included Paul, Weiss litigation partner Audra Soloway, and associates Arianna Markel and Amy Bowles.
