Pro Bono Client Achieves Favorable Outcome in Matrimonial Suit

Paul, Weiss achieved a victory for our pro bono client, a single Hasidic mother of four young children, in a matrimonial suit against her ex-husband. The ex-husband had appealed both the financial and custody portions of their divorce, while paying essentially no child support. Most important to our client, who separated from her husband in 2012 and whose divorce was finalized in April 2017, her ex-husband had also refused to give her a religious divorce (a Get), which severely limited her freedom within her community, including her ability to remarry.
In July of 2017, Paul, Weiss brought a Motion for Contempt based on defendant’s failure to comply with the Order and Judgment of Divorce. After several hearings and extensive discovery into the ex-husband’s supposed disability that prevented him from working, the Paul, Weiss team negotiated a very favorable settlement for our client in which she received a substantial lump-sum payment for child support and arrears, dismissal of the ex-husband’s appeals, and a Get, which she received in a ceremony that was held in Borough Park on Wednesday.
The Paul, Weiss team was supervised by Audra Soloway and led by Joshua Kaye; it included associates Naomi Morris and Samantha Weinberg. Sanctuary for Families acted as co-counsel on this matter.
