Pro Bono Client Achieves Asylum Victory

Paul, Weiss obtained asylum for a client, a political activist from China, whose claim had previously been denied at the asylum office. She feared persecution in China because of her political opinions and her religion. She and her husband are both Christians, and her husband had been subject to religious persecution in China. Our client also joined an outlawed political party while staying in the U.S.-taking a leadership role in the party's New York branch and participating in various protests against the Chinese Communist Party. The Chinese government found out about her activities and made repeated threats against her family back in China and threatened severe punishment. The immigration judge granted her application from the bench at the hearing.
