The Southern Coalition for Social Justice and pro bono counsel Paul, Weiss filed a challenge to North Carolina’s just-enacted law requiring voters to show photo IDs to cast a ballot.
The complaint, filed in Wake County Superior Court minutes after a final vote approving the voter ID law over North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s veto, alleges the law, Senate Bill 824, violates multiple provisions of the state constitution by purposefully discriminating against and disproportionately impacting African-American and American-Indian qualified voters, unduly burdening the fundamental right to vote, creating separate classes of voters and imposing a cost on voting, among other allegations. The election protection organization also seeks a preliminary injunction to temporarily stop the measure from taking effect across the state.
The Paul, Weiss team included litigation partners Andrew Ehrlich and Robert Atkins and associates Richard Ingram, Apeksha Vora and Patrick Kessock.
