Paul, Weiss Secures Parole Release for Pro Bono Client After 11 Denials
- Client News
- September 16, 2019
After 44 years of incarceration and 11 parole denials, a Paul, Weiss pro bono client was granted parole release in a unanimous decision by the New York State Parole Board. The decision followed a court-ordered de novo parole interview that Paul, Weiss secured for our client in a successful Article 78 challenge of a prior board decision denying him parole. Following the Article 78 ruling, Paul, Weiss worked to prepare our client for his de novo appearance and to develop materials for the board demonstrating that he poses no risk to the community if released and establishing the likelihood of his successful re-entry. Those materials highlighted our client’s deep base of community and family support; his outstanding record of achievements while in prison; his furtherance of his education in prison, including earning a Ph.D.; and his advanced age and failing health.
In its decision, the board recognized our client’s accomplishments, his thoughtful release plan, and his strong presentation at the interview.
Our client is expected to be released to his family in late October 2019.
The Paul, Weiss team included litigation associates Jeremy Benjamin and Nicolas Kabat. The matter was supervised by litigation partners Elizabeth Sacksteder and David Brown.
