- June 11, 2020
Paul, Weiss secured the early release of Leroy Hayes from the Elmira Correctional Facility in New York. The Paul, Weiss team engaged in extensive lobbying of both the Governor’s Office and the New York District Attorney’s Office, arguing that Mr. Hayes was entitled to be released under Governor Cuomo’s COVID-19 guidance due to his underlying medical conditions and the nonviolent nature of his crime. Mr. Hayes had been serving a six-year sentence for selling $25 of crack cocaine. Paul, Weiss, along with co-counsel The Legal Aid Society, had previously represented Mr. Hayes in the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court, First Judicial Department.
The Paul, Weiss team was led by litigation associate David Giller and supervised by litigation partner William Michael. The team also included litigation counsel Adam Bernstein and associates Nicholas Butto and Jacob Braly.
