Paul, Weiss Obtains Asylum for Pro Bono Client
- Client News
- September 12, 2013
Paul, Weiss obtained asylum for a Guyanese client who was abused by her husband for several years. She fled her home country in 2009 and applied for asylum in 2012, based on persecution inflicted because of her membership in a social group described as: women who are viewed as property by virtue of their position within a domestic relationship. The Paul, Weiss team argued that the one-year asylum application deadline, which the client missed, should be waived because she suffered from documented depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder during the years between her entry into the United States and her application for asylum. The client was granted asylum during her merits hearing before Judge Aviva Poczter.
The Paul, Weiss team included litigation associates Melissa Monteleone, Melanie Baptiste-Jean Noel and Kate Roh. Litigation partner Aidan Synnott supervised the matter.
