Paul, Weiss Files Amicus Briefs in Third and Ninth Circuits for Planned Parenthood
- Client News
- April 25, 2019
Paul, Weiss filed two amicus briefs on behalf of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, National Health Law Program and the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association in support of Pennsylvania’s and California’s challenges to rules promulgated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that would allow nearly all employers to deny their employees insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act for contraception if the employer has a religious or moral objection. The briefs, filed in the Third and Ninth Circuits, focused on HHS’s claim that women who are no longer able to obtain contraceptive coverage through their employers’ health insurance plans could still obtain this coverage through federal safety net programs such as Medicaid and Title X and through state-funded programs.
These briefs are the third and fourth amicus briefs Paul, Weiss has filed on behalf of the three clients in a series of similar lawsuits brought by states challenging the new regulations since they were first promulgated as interim final rules.
The Paul, Weiss team included litigation partner Allan Arffa and associates Crystal Johnson, Sierra Robart, Melina Meneguin Layerenza and Jessica Fuhrman.
