Paul, Weiss joined 68 Fortune 50 companies, law firms, and global banks in officially endorsing the Viewpoint on Marriage Equality, a statement issued by the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, recommending that the government of Japan recognize the right of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender couples to marry. There are currently 26 countries with marriage equality, including most of Japan’s international peers. The statement argues that equal marriage results in concrete benefits for the LGBT community, for companies doing business in Japan, and for Japanese companies doing business abroad. In addition to benefiting Japan’s overall economic competitiveness and increasing productivity, marriage equality would positively impact the country’s reputation on the world stage by demonstrating its commitment to individual liberty and human rights.
The firm also recently became a supporting firm of the Lawyers for LGBT & Allies Network (LLAN) Japan. LLAN’s stated mission is to provide “legal assistance to promote the understanding of LGBT and other sexual minorities and to eliminate discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, to contribute to the realization of a fair society where all people may realize their full potential in safety and where due consideration shall be given to individual dignity and diversity.”
