Paul, Weiss Achieves Asylum Victory for Client
- Client News
- July 29, 2013
Paul, Weiss obtained asylum for a client, a gay man from Mauritania, who was harassed by his community and severely beaten by his brother because of his sexual orientation. After he was severely beaten, he spent two years in hiding in a friend's apartment afraid for his life, because his brother had threatened to kill him. He was afraid to go to the police for help because of Mauritania's law punishing gay persons with death by stoning. He originally filed an affirmative asylum application without representation, and was referred to Immigration Court by the asylum officer. The immigration judge granted his application from the bench at the hearing.
The Paul, Weiss team included litigation associates Sipoura Barzideh, Rosalind Bienvenu and Laura Cramer-Babycz. Litigation partner Liza Velazquez supervised the matter.
