Paul, Weiss Achieves Asylum Victory for Client
- Client News
- July 19, 2013
Paul, Weiss has obtained asylum for a client, a gay man from Peru who, from childhood and throughout his adult life, was subjected to extreme persecution on account of his sexual orientation. As a gay man, this client suffered public ridicule, abuse by his family and members of his community and multiple unlawful arrests, as well as verbal and physical abuse by police officers.
In desperation, the client fled Peru in 1999 before eventually arriving in the United States. In 2010, he received the harrowing news that he was HIV-positive. For the last thirteen years, he has worked to build a life for himself in the United States. He supports himself by cleaning houses and has worked as a volunteer for various HIV/AIDS NGOs. The client's case was presented to an asylum officer in New Jersey and he was awarded asylum on July 19.
The Paul, Weiss team included corporate associates Victoria Forrester and Jaclyn Rabin. Litigation partner Liza Velazquez supervised the matter.
