Jamaican Pro Bono Client Obtains Asylum
- Client News
- April 18, 2016
Paul, Weiss obtained asylum for a young man from Jamaica, who was forced to flee his home country after contracting HIV because he feared he would be persecuted for being gay. Despite his best efforts to hide his sexual orientation, he was called derogatory names and his own brother threatened to kill him if he found out that our client was in fact gay. He saw other men beaten and killed for being gay and he feared the same fate. The asylum officer granted him asylum after hearing his story.
The Paul, Weiss team included associates Sipoura Barzideh, Raj Borsellino and Chand Edwards-Balfour. Litigation partner Aidan Synnott supervised the matter.
