HIV-Positive Jamaican Man Wins Asylum
- Client News
- December 28, 2016
Paul, Weiss obtained asylum for an HIV-positive gay man from
Jamaica who sought asylum in the U.S. after facing persecution
because of his sexual orientation. Throughout his childhood and
adult life, he suffered verbal and physical abuse by members of his
community and received multiple death threats, including shortly
before he left Jamaica for the last time. He applied for asylum in
April 2014, and on December 13, his case was presented to an asylum
officer in New Jersey. His request for asylum was granted on
December 28.
This matter was referred to Paul, Weiss by Immigration Equality,
an LGBTQ immigrant rights organization that provides free legal
services and policy advocacy on behalf of LGBTQ and HIV-positive
immigrants.
The Paul, Weiss team included litigation associates Jeffrey Bae, Julia
Maddera and Benjamin Weintraub. Litigation
