Litigation partner Chris Boehning and counsel Janus Schutte, alongside other members of a Paul, Weiss team, were featured in Reuters’ monthly “Pro Bono Heroes” column. The column, “Pro Bono Heroes: How Big (And Small) Firms Helped Win the Sandy Hook Settlement,” discusses the important contributions of a Paul, Weiss team that paved the way to a historic $73 million settlement in the wrongful death class action against Remington Arms Co. LLC, maker of the Bushmaster AR-15 assault-style rifle used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
The article highlights a pivotal motion to compel filed by Chris, Janus and the team after Remington failed to comply with its discovery obligations. “Remington has treated discovery as a game,” Chris wrote on July 2, 2021. “Remington has sought delay and obfuscation at every turn.” The first page of the motion included cartoon images of ice cream, Santa Claus and a weightlifter that Remington turned over in its document production, which showcased the lack of seriousness with which the gunmaker appeared to take the lawsuit.
The article also notes the team’s leading role in protecting the Sandy Hook families’ claims during Remington’s second bankruptcy proceeding in 2020, highlighting the substantial contributions of restructuring partner Kyle Kimpler and litigation partners Elizabeth Sacksteder and William Clareman.
