Litigation partner Kannon Shanmugam was recognized, alongside co-counsel, in The American Lawyer’s October 25 “Litigation Daily” column for overturning a first-of-its kind $440 million judgment against Paul, Weiss client Carnival Corporation and three other major cruise lines. The plaintiff, Havana Docks Corp., claimed it had an ownership interest in what is now known as the Havana Cruise Port Terminal prior to the Cuban Revolution, and alleged that the cruise lines “trafficked” in the confiscated property by sailing to Havana between 2016 and 2019, in violation of the Helms-Burton Act. However, the Eleventh Circuit held that Havana Docks held a leasehold on the property that expired in 2004, before the time of the alleged trafficking by the cruise lines. The Paul, Weiss team representing Carnival also included litigation associates Abigail Frisch Vice and William Marks.
