Dave Curran Quoted in The Wall Street Journal on Growing Role of Compliance Officers in Corporate Sustainability Efforts

Chief Sustainability and ESG Officer Dave Curran was quoted in a Wall Street Journal article, “Compliance Officers Play Growing Role in Corporate Sustainability Efforts,” published on May 4. The article discusses how compliance officers have recently taken on a more active role as companies such as Dell and Western Union seek to show investors their commitment to sustainability by putting substantial resources behind their broader environmental, social and governance pledges.

Corporate governance experts expect that involvement to continue, in part due to the legal risks associated with such commitments. “Over the last couple of years, [ESG] has become a mountaintop of risk,” Dave said. “Lawyers and compliance executives are getting more and more involved in everything from pressure-testing disclosures, to analyzing processes and procedures, to tracking, measuring and monitoring these programs.”
