Description of Program and Relief
Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) For Children in Low-Income Areas
The SFSP provides meals through certain sites located in low-income areas to children 18 and younger. Despite the title, it is available now in districts where school closures are in effect.
Government or Lead Agency
Wyoming Department of Education, Nutrition Section (“WDE”)
Dates Available
Whenever school closures are in effect.
Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions
Children 18 and younger are eligible to receive free meals and snacks. Meals and snacks are also available to persons over the age of 18 who have disabilities and who participate in school programs for people who are mentally or physically disables. Meals and snacks are provided whenever schools are closed.
On March 11, 2020, the WDE received waiver approval from the USDA, allowing schools to serve meals to students in a non-congregate setting. USDA guidelines currently provide that home delivery may potentially be feasible. In order to deliver these meals, households of eligible children must provide written consent to schools indicating that the household wants to receive delivered meals and must confirm for those schools its current contact information and the number of eligible children residing that household. Children do not need to be present at the time of food delivery, and if the meal is shelf-stable, no one needs to be present as long as the address has been verified.
