Description of Program and Relief

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (“TANF”)

Virginia’s TANF program is a pre-existing program that provides eligible families with a monthly cash payment to meet their basic needs. In response to COVID-19, certification periods ending between March 2020 and May 2020 will have services automatically extended for six months.

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions

To check eligibility and apply for the program, please visit Virginia’s CommonHelp portal here: https://www.commonhelp.virginia.gov/. For a child to be eligible he or she must be: under age 18, or if 18, graduating from high school before age 19; going to school regularly if he is between the ages of five and 18; living with a parent or other relative, a U.S. citizen, or an eligible immigrant.
