Description of Program and Relief

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

Utah’s SNAP program provides relief for individuals and families to afford food at supermarkets, grocery stores, and farmers’ markets. Individuals and families adversely impacted by COVID-19 should be eligible if they meet general eligibility requirements.

Families with children receiving SNAP benefits on March 16, 2020 will automatically receive up to $308 per child in Pandemic-Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) to cover the cost of what would have been school meals from March 16 through May 29, 2020. P-EBT benefits will be available to SNAP households in the beginning of August.

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions

To receive SNAP benefits, household income must be below 130% of the Federal Poverty Level and you must meet all remaining eligibility requirements. In addition, resources such as bank accounts, cash, houses, land, or personal property may be counted to determine SNAP eligibility. If the household has at least one member who is age 60 or older or disabled, countable resources apart from monthly income may not exceed $3,500. All other households many not have more than $2,250 in countable resources apart from monthly income. For questions about eligibility and counted resources, workers can contact an eligibility specialist at (801) 526-0950 for the Salt Lake Area or toll-free at 1-866-435-7414.

In some circumstances, workers are ineligible for SNAP benefits if they have quit their job. The Department of Workers Services advises workers who become seriously ill as a result of COVID-19 to not quit their jobs. Instead, a worker who becomes ill due to COVID-19 should inform his or her employer and allow the employer to react to the worker’s absence.

In addition, those applying for or receiving SNAP benefits must participate in the Employment and Training Program to maintain assistance. This includes registering as a job seeker with the Department of Workforce Services, completing online workshops, and making job contacts and keeping an online log of job search progress. Able-bodied adults without dependents may receive SNAP benefits for 3 months in a period of 36 months without participating in an employment or training activity.
