Description of Program and Relief
Families First Cash Benefit Program (a/k/a TANF)
Tennessee provides Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) to eligible families through its Families First program. The benefits are limited to 60 months in a participant’s lifetime. The amount of the cash benefit will depend on the applicant’s family size.
The state has also instituted a program called the Emergency Cash Assistance Program, which makes TANF available to families who meet income eligibility criteria and who have experienced loss of employment as a result of COVID-19. The eligibility requirements for this program are set out in a separate summary titled “Emergency Cash Assistance Program.”

Applicants can determine whether they meet the financial and other eligibility requirements for the Families First program by clicking here.
