Description of Program and Relief

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance for Those Not Covered by Regular State Unemployment Benefits

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, or PUA, is a federal program for people who are unable to work as a result of COVID-19 and are not otherwise eligible for regular state unemployment benefits, such as self-employed workers and independent contractors.

Beginning April 24, 2020

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions

Eligible participants for PUA must be ineligible for regular state unemployment benefits. Individuals who applied and were denied for regular state unemployment benefits before April 24 may need to provide additional information for the Division of Employment Security to determine whether they are eligible for PUA. Once approved, participants must complete a Weekly Certification every week for which benefits were filed to receive payments. The Weekly Certification must report any wages earned during that week.
