Description of Program and Relief
Cash Assistance for Families to Purchase Food for Children Impacted by School Closings
North Carolina has been approved for the new Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) program, which helps families purchase food for children impacted by school closings due to COVID-19.
Families will receive approximately $370 in total P-EBT benefits per child, provided over two installments. Unused benefits will rollover month-to-month and must be used within 365 days.
Government or Lead Agency
North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
Dates Available
Families are being approved to receive EBT cards in waves. The first wave includes those families with children already enrolled in free and reduced lunch programs as of December 2019. The second wave includes those families with children who enrolled between January and March 2020. The third wave includes families with children who enrolled after March 2020. All eligible households should receive their EBT cards by June 10.
Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions
Families need not apply for the P-EBT program. Eligibility information for P-EBT comes from the Department of Public Instruction based off enrollment in free and reduced-price meals. P-EBT eligible families already receiving Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) benefits will receive an additional benefit on their existing EBT card. P-EBT eligible families not already enrolled in FNS will be mailed a new EBT card. Families who receive a new EBT card will receive a letter in the mail from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services explaining how to activate and use their card.
