Description of Program and Relief
A+ Scholarship Reduction/Suspension of Eligibility Requirements
The A+ Scholarship Program provides scholarship funds to eligible graduates of A+ designated high schools who attend participating public community colleges or vocational/technical schools, or certain private two-year vocational/technical schools.
In response to COVID-19, certain eligibility requirements are being reduced or suspended for 2020 high school seniors and postsecondary students applying for scholarship renewal.
Government or Lead Agency
Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development
Dates Available
Applies to 2020 and 2021 high school seniors and current postsecondary students applying for renewal
Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions
High school seniors applying for the A+ Scholarship must: attend an A+ designated high school for two years, graduate with a grade point average of 2.5 or higher, have at least a 95% attendance record for grades 9–12, perform at least 50 hours of unpaid tutoring or mentoring, and achieve a score of proficient or advanced on the Algebra I end-of-course exam.
In response to the disruption caused by COVID-19, the GPA, tutoring/mentoring and Algebra I requirements are being adjusted. 2020 high school seniors with a GPA of 2.5 or higher at the end of the fall 2019 or spring semesters will be eligible. For districts that moved to pass/fail grading during the 2020 spring semester, the district may use the student’s GPA at the time classes were halted or GPA at the third quarter break. For 2020 seniors, the number of tutoring mentoring hours has been reduced to 25 hours, and high schools may utilize the six-month exceptional circumstances provision for students unable to complete 25 hours prior to graduation. The Algebra I requirement is waived for all 2020 high school seniors, including those who have already taken the exam but did not meet the score requirement and those who have not yet taken the exam. This waiver has been extended for the full 2020-2021 academic school year.
Postsecondary students applying for scholarships are required to maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (and otherwise maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by their school) and complete 12 semester credit hours (or complete 90% of required clock hours) during each term in which the A+ award is received.
In response to the disruption caused by COVID-19In addition, the GPA requirement is waived for students applying to renew the award and students are only required to meet the school’s requirements for satisfactory academic progress. The requirement to meet 12 hours for semester, or 90% of the clock hours, is not waived. However, this requirement is met if the student completes all of the hours that were available to them.
