Description of Program and Relief

Expanding Pharmacy Practice

Pharmacy Technicians. Licensed pharmacy technicians may perform remote processing of patient-specific prescriptions for Massachusetts licensed pharmacies and health care facilities without the direct on-site supervision by licensed pharmacists.

Emergency Authorization Practice. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who are licensed in another State and are in good standing may work for Massachusetts pharmacies and health care facilities a during the Governor’s declared State of Emergency upon receipt of written approval from the Board of Registration in Pharmacy.

Emergency Prescription Refills. In the event a patient’s prescription does not have any remaining refills and the patient's prescriber is unavailable for authorization, pharmacists and pharmacies may dispense refills for the continuation of therapy for a chronic condition.

Central Filling of Prescriptions. Retail pharmacies and institutional pharmacies may engage in central-filling of patient-specific prescriptions, including compounded sterile and complex nonsterile preparations.

Administration of Medications for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder. In response to the potential shortage of nurses to administer methadone and buprenorphine as medication for the treatment of opioid use disorder (MOUD drugs) in licensed and certified opioid treatment programs and acute treatment services, licensed pharmacists and pharmacy interns who are in good standing may administer MOUD drugs in those programs and services under the order of a qualified practitioner during the Governor’s declared State of Emergency and subject to certain conditions and limitations (as described in the relevant order).
