Description of Program and Relief

Expanding Access to Physicians’ Services

Retired Physicians. All physicians who have retired in good standing since March 17, 2019 with no outstanding complaints or open investigations shall have their licenses immediately reactivated upon request.

90-Day Extensions of Licenses. All physicians in good standing whose licenses have or will come up for renewal during the state of emergency shall have their renewal date extended until 90 days after the termination of the Governor’s declared State of Emergency.

Emergency Issuance of Licenses to Out-of-State Physicians. Physicians who are licensed in another State and are in good standing shall be issued an emergency Massachusetts license that shall remain valid during the Governor’s declared State of Emergency.

Residents Performing Outside Specialty Program. A limited licensee (e.g., a resident) may engage in patient care activities outside of his or her specialty training program provided that the activities: (i) occur under the direction of a faculty member; (ii) occur at the health care facility or at the facility's approved affiliates; and (iii) are in the same specialty as the specialty training program or are approved by the program director.
