Description of Program and Relief

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a program administered by the Iowa Department of Human Rights that assists low-income families to meet the partial costs of home heating costs through a one-time payment made directly to the utility or heating fuel vendor. Qualified applicants who are the head of the household are protected from having their natural gas or electric service disconnected during Iowa’s annual winter moratorium, which is typically November 1 through April 1. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the application for participation in LIHEAP has been extended to May 31, 2020.
