Description of Program and Relief
Extension of Expiration Dates for Driver’s Licenses, Titles and Registration
On May 17 , 2020, the Governor of Iowa extended deadlines concerning driver’s licenses and vehicle titles, registration, and license plates.
Driver’s licenses. Under the new rules, a driver’s license issued to an individual age 72 years old or older will not be considered expired if the expiration date on the license is on or after January 16, 2020 (60 days before the effective date of the proclamation) or if the license expires any time during the declared disaster.
For a driver’s license issued to anyone at any age, the driver’s license expiration date will not be enforced for any Iowa license expiring January 16, 2020 and beyond. Any Iowa driver’s license with an expiration date of January 16, 2020 through the declared disaster emergency (currently through April 16, 2020) can still be used for driving.
Vehicle registrations and titles. All vehicle registrations will be considered not expired if the expiration date of the registration is 60 days before the date of the proclamation or if the registration expires any time during this declared disaster. For new or transferred vehicles, Iowans will not be required to obtain a title and registration within 30 days. For vehicles purchased from a dealer, Iowans will not be required to obtain license plates on a vehicle purchased from a dealer within 45 days.
