Description of Program and Relief
Temporary Eviction Moratorium for Residential Tenants Impacted by COVID-19
The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors has passed a temporary moratorium on residential tenant evictions for tenants unable to pay rent due to COVID-19. The moratorium does not apply to commercial tenants.
To receive the protections afforded under the moratorium, a tenant must (1) notify the landlord in writing before rent becomes due and inform the landlord that the tenant has a “covered reason” for delayed payment; (2) provide the landlord with documentation to substantiate the stated “covered reason”; and (3) pay the portion of rent that the tenant is able afford at the time rent is due.
The tenant will still be responsible for the full amount of rent owed and will have up to 120 days following the expiration of the Governor’s Executive Order N-28-20 to repay the rent owed to the landlord.

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions
Residential tenants who are unable to pay rent due to a “covered reason.” A covered reason includes circumstances under which the tenant (1) was sick with COVID-19 or caring for a household or family member sick with COVID-19; (2) has experienced lay-off, loss of hours or other income reduction due to COVID-19 or the state of emergency; (3) is complying with a recommendation from a government agency to stay home, self-quarantine or avoid congregating with others during the state of emergency; or (4) needed to miss work to care for a home-bound school-age child.
