Description of Program and Relief
Small Business Assistance Grant Program
The Santa Clara City Council has created a Small Business Grant Assistance Program to distribute $500,000 in funds to independently owned and operated small businesses in the City to maintain their business and workforce. Grant funds may be used only to cover payroll or lease payments for business premises.

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions
Grant applicants must be independently owned or operated businesses with at least one and no more than 25 full-time employees and must operate out of a physical commercial storefront within the city limits of Santa Clara. Applicants must also have been in operation for at least one year as of March 1, 2020, possess an active City of Santa Clara Business License, and be in good standing with the City. Applicants must also verify that the business has experienced a loss of income due to COVID-19 by filling out the Estimated Disaster Economic Worksheet provided by the City. Businesses deemed non-essential by the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department will be eligible for a grant of $10,000. Businesses deemed essential by the County Public Health Department will be eligible for a grant of $5,000. Within 30 days of the issuance of the grant, businesses receiving funding will be required to (a) certify via a written statement how many jobs they retained or how many months of lease payments for the business premises they paid allowing the business to continue operations, and (b) submit proof that the grant funds have been spent on acceptable purposes. Franchises, chains (national or local with three or more locations), or operations restricted to patrons above the age of 18 (e.g., smoke shops, bars) are not eligible for grant funds.

Applications will be available beginning the week of April 13, 2020, and funds will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
