Description of Program and Relief
Funding for Providers of Shelter for Homeless Individuals and Families through Project Homekey
Under Project Homekey, the State of California is awarding $600 million in funding from a combination of federal and state sources to support agencies and local government authorities providing shelter for individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness and at risk of medical complications from COVID-19. Awarded funds can be applied towards purchasing or renovating hotels, motels, and vacant apartment buildings for conversion into permanent, long-term housing for those experiencing homelessness.

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions
Award recipients will have until December 30, 2020 to expend federal funds and until June 30, 2022 to expend state funds received through the program.
Geographical limitations also apply. HCD has divided the state into eight regions with each region having funding reserved on a time-limited basis during the “priority application” period.
Application Deadlines
Due to expenditure deadlines, and the potential for program oversubscription, eligible applicants are encouraged to submit their completed application as soon as possible. Pre-application consultations and the priority application period end on August 13, 2020. The final application due date is September 29, 2020.
