Description of Program and Relief
Emergency Residential Rental Assistance Program
The City of San Diego has established the COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance Program to assist low-income families who are experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The program will provide one-time payments of up to $4,000 per qualifying household to help pay past-due and upcoming rent. Payments will be made directly to the household’s landlord.
Government or Lead Agency
San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) on behalf of the City of San Diego.
Dates Available
Applications will be accepted from July 20, 2020 through August 7, 2020.
Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions
A household must meet the following criteria: (1) have a City of San Diego address; (2) household income at or below 60 percent of the San Diego Area Median Income as of January 1, 2020; (3) the household may not currently be receiving any rental subsidies; (4) the household cannot currently be a tenant of a property owned or managed by the San Diego Housing Commission; (5) the household cannot have savings sufficient to meet their financial need; (6) the household must have eligible immigration status (U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, registry immigrant, a refugee or person seeking or granted asylum); and (7) the household hardship must be directly related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
To disburse funds fairly and help households who are most in need, a prioritization system and random-selection process will be used to select the applicants who will receive a rental assistance payment. Priority will be given to families with minor children and households where at least one member is age 62 or older.
If an applicant is selected, the San Diego Housing Commission staff will coordinate with the applicant and their landlord or property management company to send payments. All payments will be made electronically.
