Description of Program and Relief
Childcare for Hospital Workers and Emergency Responders
On May 13, 2020, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti expanded the previously-announced L.A. Emergency Child Care Connection, a program to provide child care resources to hospital workers and emergency responders during the COVID-19 crisis. The program initially covered only essential employees at participating hospitals but will now cover police officers, members of the fire department, the Port of Los Angeles, and Los Angeles World Airports as well as staff from the city’s sanitation and personnel departments charged with protecting public health.
The program includes three main components:
-
Child care (including free meals) at 18 Los Angeles Parks and Recreation centers near hospitals for kids 6-to-14 years old, Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parents must pre-register to participate in this program and will be asked to show their hospital or City ID at drop off each day. Space is limited and is allocated on a first come, first served basis. If interested, please contact Recreation and Parks through this form, which includes a list of participating recreation centers. -
For employees at participating hospitals only: A $100 stipend per shift to help essential hospital employees pay for the type of childcare that works best for them, including by paying a relative or friend to watch the kids. Participating hospitals must commit to making the full stipend available to all non-professional employees and prioritize low-wage workers. A list of participating hospitals can be found here.
