Description of Program and Relief
Unemployment Benefits
The Alabama Department of Labor has a pre-existing program providing unemployment benefits and resources for state residents. These benefits and resources are also available to employees affected by a temporary closure as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, or otherwise unable to work due to COVID-19, as per the eligibility requirements below.

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions
Workers may be eligible if they are:

Quarantined by a medical professional or government agency,
-
Laid off or sent home without pay for an extended period due to COVID-19 concerns,
-
Diagnosed with COVID-19, or
-
Caring for an immediate family member who is diagnosed with COVID-19.
Standard requirements are waived including that a laid-off worker (i) be “able and available” to work while receiving benefits, (ii) searching for other work (provided they take reasonable steps to preserve their ability to return to work upon lifting of quarantine / recovery from illness) and (iii) the waiting week.
Unemployment benefits are not available to workers being paid to work from home or those receiving paid sick or vacation leave.
