Kai Zeng is a partner in the Restructuring Department and Finance and Hybrid Capital & Special Situations groups. Kai has extensive experience in cross-border restructurings advising sponsors, debtors, creditors and strategic investors on restructurings of stressed and distressed businesses. He also advises investment banks, hedge funds and private equity houses in their review and diligence of European investment opportunities in par, stressed and distressed transactions.
Previously, Kai served as Investment Director & Transaction Counsel at Blantyre Capital, a London-based investment firm, where he helped lead and manage restructuring processes and workouts of distressed situations, structured capital solutions, and analyse the legal risk on investments. He began his career as a restructuring associate, and later partner, at another leading law firm.
EXPERIENCE
Kai’s representative matters have included:
- Nordic Aviation, one of the world’s largest aircraft leasing companies, in relation to its financial restructuring
- Smile Telecoms, a provider of telecommunication services in sub-Saharan Africa, in relation to its restructuring plan, the first restructuring plan to disenfranchise creditors by asserting they had no economic interest
- Selecta, a leading European unattended self-service retailer, in relation to its financial restructuring through a scheme of arrangement
- A leading global alternative investment firm in its capacity as a landlord to the Four Seasons Health Care Group, in the financial and operational restructuring of its real estate portfolio, and migration to alternative operators
- The ad hoc committee of noteholders and lead investors to Debenhams, a leading UK department store chain, including through its pre-packaged and trading administration
- Dümmen Orange, a global breeder and propagator of flowers and plants, in relation to its financial restructuring
- Galapagos, a European provider of heat exchange and machine cooling systems, in relation to its financial restructuring
- Forever 21, a worldwide fashion retailer, operating in over 13 European jurisdictions, in relation to the restructuring of its European operations
