In this issue, we examine the implications of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act on sponsor M&A transactions.
In fundraising and M&A market news, February was generally a down month compared to December 2013 and January 2014. Sponsor deal activity decreased significantly across the board, as we saw declines in the number and dollar volume of U.S. sponsor-backed exits and global and U.S. sponsor-related M&A transactions. The only upward movement was in U.S. private equity fundraising, which saw an increase in capital raised as compared to January but a decrease in the number of funds closed. Notwithstanding the increase in capital raised in February, however, we note that those figures still show a significant decline when compared to year-end 2013 statistics.
