Lawyers Are Getting the First Calls on Deals, Rob Kindler Tells Law360
August 2, 2024
Global M&A Chair Rob Kindler was featured in a Law360 article, “Banking Vet Still Has Work To Do As Paul, Weiss M&A Head,” discussing his move from investment banking and trends in the M&A market. In the article, published August 2, Rob highlights key differences in M&A work that brought him back to practicing law.
“Twenty-plus years ago, the investment banks were usually the first call that clients made when deciding whether or not to do a deal,” Rob says. “Now when companies are looking to do deals, the lawyers usually get the first call, because the first question that clients want to know is whether there are any regulatory issues.” As clients have grown more concerned with the national security and antitrust aspects of transactions, lawyers’ unique ability to address these issues have made them primary consultants in the process.
With credit funds in addition to banks financing deals, activity in the market is rising. “It's good to see that the M&A market is finally picking up again after we've gone through several years with reduced volumes,” Rob says. “It's absolutely picking up. So I think people are very optimistic about that.”
