Laura Turano Discusses Path to Public M&A on Drinks With The Deal Podcast
October 5, 2023
Corporate partner Laura Turano appeared on the most recent episode of the Drinks With The Deal podcast to discuss the keys to her success as a public M&A partner with host David Marcus. In the wide-ranging interview, which first aired on October 5, Laura talks about her path to becoming a lawyer and how she applies lessons learned from formative experiences before law school—including teaching elementary school children in Spain—to her work as an M&A lawyer every day.
“As a teacher … one of the things you have to be aware of is how are people absorbing the information,” Laura says. “My clients are super sophisticated and super smart and super awesome at their jobs, but they each have a different way that they learn information, and being able to convey information … in a way that it’s actionable so they can make huge decisions is really the art of what we do day in and day out.”
Laura also discusses preparation as a way to make up for a lack of experience and set junior lawyers apart from their peers; her move to Paul, Weiss and the opportunity to work within the firm’s market-leading corporate and litigation practices; key deals she worked on this year, including Carrier Global’s $13 billion acquisition of Viessman Climate Solutions and Merck’s $10.6 billion acquisition of Prometheus Biosciences; and building strong client relationships as a woman in the M&A space, among other topics.
“I decided to … not be stressed out about things that people would say a woman wouldn’t be good at,” Laura says. “I wasn’t going to get stressed out about what happens if I don’t get invited to as many drinks or what happens about the fact that I don’t play golf; I would just do really excellent work and that would really pay off, and I would network from that work. I think that has a real snowballing effect.”
