A few months before his tragic passing, litigation partner Dave Brown discussed his pro bono advocacy on behalf of clients who have been convicted of crimes they did not commit. “Exoneration cases are really difficult and they take a lot of time,” Dave said, “but helping someone win their freedom is one of the most meaningful and important things you can devote your life to.”

In a case he described as among the most rewarding of his career, Dave helped lead the team that represented Pablo Fernandez, who spent 24 years in prison for a murder he did not commit, winning reversal of Mr. Fernandez’s conviction in February 2019. “Every time I saw you speak for me in court, I always felt like you were speaking from the heart… from a place of love,” Dave recalled Pablo telling him. “That’s probably the best compliment that any client has ever paid me.”
