Description of Program and Relief
Extension of Expiration Dates of License or Vehicle Registration
The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (“DMV”) has extended the validity of every non-commercial driver’s license, learner’s permit, special identification card, and vehicle credential set to expire between March 15, 2020 and July 31, 2020, for a period of 180 days from the original date of expiration, not to exceed October 31, 2020. Virginia driver’s licenses, learner’s permits, and identification cards set to expire between August 1, 2020 and October 31, 2020 are extended for a period 60 days from the original date of expiration.
Vehicle registrations set to expire in March–July 2020 are also extended for 180 days from the original date of expiration, not to exceed October 31, 2020.
Renewal fees for driver’s licenses, identification cards, and vehicle registration will remain the same and no late fees will be imposed for customers who renew during the extension period. The month in which the new credential expires will remain the same as the original month of expiration—for example, if a customer’s credential originally expired in April 2020 and the customer has until October 2020 to renew, the new credential will be valid until April 2021.
